by nicole panteleakos.

Looking for some new activities to provide sensory-friendly fun for charges on the Autism Spectrum? In this sensory fun series we'll explore three activities to engage all five senses, especially touch, while reinforcing skills learned in the classroom for a whole new take on creative fun. Get your back-up outfit ready, nannies, and prepare to get messy!

PART 1

SHAVING CREAM ART

Worlds collide when shaving cream meets creativity.

Materials

  • White shaving cream
  • Food coloring
  • Old paintbrushes
  • Thick plain paper
  • Plastic knife
  • Old newspapers and/or craft table or tray

If not using a craft table or tray, spread newspapers over a flat surface. Spray the shaving cream onto the protected table or tray and add a few drops of food coloring as desired. Let the kiddos use either their hands or the paintbrushes to mix the colors into the shaving cream, then paint with it on the paper. When finished, scrape any excess shaving cream into the trash with the plastic knife (you can handle this step for younger children). While the pictures are drying, feel free to continue to play in the shaving cream! Plastic gloves and/or play clothes strongly recommended: this is messy fun!

Stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3 of this series, "The Super Silly Shower-Bath" and "Mud Math".

Note: This activity requires close adult supervision.
